INTERREG III A KARELIA

Fish-way section

Creating a fish-way connection from the Lieksanjoki River to Russia belongs to the larger framework of the Landlocked Salmon of Lake Pielinen into the Lieksanjoki River Programme. The aim of this section of the project is to secure the diversity of the fish stocks as well as the exploitation of their economic utility through nature tourism, paying attention to sustainability. In the course of the project, a general plan of constructing a fish-way in the Lieksanjoki River will be laid out; the necessary planning permission will be applied for, and the first and most important part in the building of fish-way will be implemented, and the project as a whole will be marketed.

As a result, the diversity of the heritage of the landlocked salmon will be secured by constructing a fish-way in the old riverbed and by creating conditions for a unique form of nature tourism in the Pielinen Karelia region. In addition, as a result, clear and concrete plans on further measures of fish-way building and on legal requirements will be created. These measures will be carried out in co-operation with  Russian partners and with travel organisations and local enterprises of the Pielinen Karelia region. The project will take place from the 1st of June to the 31st of December 2004.
